For over 150 years, the Brooklyn Navy Yard churned out America's most famous fighting ships, from the USS Maine to the USS Missouri. Today, the Yard is considered a national model for sustainable urban industrial parks. This tour, given in partnership with Turnstile Tours, explores the 300-acre facility and offers opportunities to get off the bus for a closer look at the Yard's most intriguing sites, including a dry dock that's been used since before the Civil War, the 24-acre former Navy hospital campus that is virtually frozen in time and the nation's first multi-story LEED ...

Making it in NYC: Brooklyn Navy Yard Inside Industry Tour

Experience the work of artisans, techies, and manufacturers at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and learn why they, and hundreds of other companies, have chosen to make their products locally. This 90-minute guided tour will begin at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92′s Making It In NYC gallery, an exhibit that explores a new era of manufacturing in New York City today. Participants will then head out into the Yard for an immersive look at “making it” then and now at the Yard and for two site visits. The first stop is at SITU Fabrication for a behind-the-scenes ...

These Hands Built: A Musical Performance and Art Installation

Taking inspiration from 1940s art and culture, the physical workplaces and the stories of the known and unknown African American men and women workers of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, THESE HANDS BUILT aims to recognize and honor the presence of the Black hands that built ships, (re) built bodies, (re) built nations and built foundations for social and political change for future generations within the United States and abroad.

Poster Design Workshop with Woodside Press

SAT FEB 21 2015 > 3 p.m.

Don't be fooled—while the antique presses inside Woodside Press look old, they still come alive to produce colorful, whimsical designs. After touring the facility, letterpress printer and bookbinder Davin Kuntze teaches you how to set type, mix ink colors, and print five of your own small posters. Then, you can trade posters with other participants before taking home a colorful portfolio.

Exhibit Tour: African American Heritage & the Brooklyn Navy Yard

Join BLDG 92 and Inside Out Tours for an exhibition tour in celebration of Black Artstory Month. On this guided exhibit tour participants will learn about the past, present and future of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the experiences and contributions of African American and minority groups at the Yard and in surrounding communities.

Sustainable Architecture and Industry Bus Tour

SUN FEB 15 2015 > 11 a.m.

With the cold weather upon us, we'll be offering this exploration of the Yard as a bus. You'll learn about many of the Yard's green initiatives, including adaptive reuse of historic structures and materials, cutting edge LEED-certified buildings, alternative energy projects, and sustainable manufacturing practices employed by Yard tenants. Get an up-close look at the nation's first green multi-story industrial building, see wind-and-solar-powered lamps built and installed at the Yard, and peer down into a 19th-century dry dock that is still in use today. Factory Tour: Whiskey Wars!

SAT FEB 14 2015 > 4 p.m.

As the song goes – “Love is a Battlefield” and in the 19th century, the love of whiskey led to the Marines being dispatched from the Navy Yard to crack down on illegal whiskey distilling in what became known as the WHISKEY WARS.  Today, Kings County Distillery is proudly making moonshine and more on premises. Join BLDG 92 and Kings County Distillery on a tour (and tasting!) that explores whiskey scandals of the past and the resurgence of the industry today.  

Couples Welding Workshop

SAT FEB 14 2015 > 3 p.m.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, invite someone you love to this special Tools & Talent workshop with artist, welder and Yard tenant, Susan Woods. Susan will demonstrate basic welding and metal fabrication techniques and give participants a chance to get hands-on in the process. Couples will create custom hearts to take home. Class size is limited to 8 people.
